Well, that seems completely unfair.

I met a fabulous, sassy and charming 6 year old last night. She had heart surgeries starting as early as 3 months. We hung out. We chatted. We compared "zippers." We are both cool. I HATE with everything in me that she has one, too.

If you'd like something to remember Michael Jackson's career...

...look no further.
I stumbled across these classic Michael Jackson posters tonight at Amazon and wanted to share. The middle image actually comes framed and matted and was originally $99! I debated whether putting this up was in poor taste, but The Todd and I ran out to a record store the night the sad news broke to buy a cd for the show--there was already 18 people milling around that section. I think everyone would like something to remember him by...I imagine we'll see more Michael memorabilia in days to come.

I'M FREAKING OUT!!!!!

Omigod, I get to meet Martin Fry! This is Martin. I want to marry him but there are two things standing in my way. First...well...I AM married. Second, I fear that he would insist on wearing his shiny gold suit to the ceremony.

There's lots and lots of celebrities one meets along the way when working in radio. But, there is NOTHING like meeting the heroes of your youth. Case in point: over the last couple years or so we interviewed both Rob Pattinson (he was "Cedric Diggory" then, pre "Twilight") and Chris Pine ("Star Trek") and, hmmm, meh. (Editor's note: as a matter of fact, we were truly astonished that Chris Pine carried Captain Kirk. He is the most bland, non-charismatic individual on the planet. He actually sat in studio in The Todd's chair, and my spouse still could not remember him at all. "Honey! Chris Pine! The blondish guy! He sat in your chair when we interviewed him for "Bottle Shock!" "Who?" "Chris Pine!" "What does he look like again?")

But I digress.

It's your first childhood crush--the first "Teen Beat" poster you put on your wall that marks you for life. My cousin Mindy and I engaged in vicious battles as children when we played "Make Believe" to have the right to be named "Julie" in the game. This was because Bobby Sherman's big song was "Julie Julie Julie Do You Love Me?" If you were "Julie," you got to be Bobby Sherman's girlfriend. I later interviewed Bobby Sherman for some 70's compilation CD release and he sang "Erin Erin Erin Do You Love Me?" to me. No moment of triumph will EVER eclipse that, EVER.

Still digressing...

So, about Martin Fry--ABC's "The Look of Love," "Poison Arrow," "Be Near Me" defined the 80's for me. I was trying to break into radio, I was passionate about modern music--and he was so dang cool in that shiny gold suit and his flippy Emo hair. I looooved him so. Now, I get to meet him next week at the Regeneration concert! This is SO much cooler than Rob Pattinson! Seriously, I'm FREAKING OUT!

Don't tell The Todd.

My Afternoon With Michael Jackson

Wow, that title sounds important, doesn't it? It wasn't quite like that. I was working at MIX 105 in Virginia when our rep from the Epic label let us tag along on a Michael Jackson press conference near Washington DC. This was right after "Black or White" came out, 1991, I think. Michael was combining a visit to a pediatric hospital with a tour announcement.

Now, when radio does press conferences with tv, it's much like that scene in "Titanic" where the first class passengers are settling into the lifeboat with their little dogs and their furs, and the steerage passengers get locked onto their deck to avoid "disruption." Except, the tv camera crews are the guys with the furs, and I'm the radio person banging on the locked gate yelling, "Hey! It's getting kinda damp down here!" I finally turned off my tape recorder and just watched. Michael was walking through a pediatric AIDS ward--there were, unfortunately, plenty of beds filled in that section of Washington DC.

Michael is--was--a notorious germaphobe. He wore gloves then not just to hide the spreading vitiligo, but because he was obsessed with avoiding people's filthy hands grabbing at him. Yet he would draw off his gloves at each bedside, carefully hold the frail hand, maybe put an arm around the patient's shoulder. A hospital administrator leaned in and told me that he was doing it deliberately for the cameras.

You see, back in the late 80's, early 90's, no one really knew much about AIDS. There was still plenty of misinformation that you could catch the virus simply by touching an infected person. Many AIDS patients died then without ever feeling a human touch again that wasn't wrapped in a rubber glove. Michael was forcing himself to overcome his natural reticence and dislike of contact to make a point.

Winston Churchill once cynically remarked that "I fully expect to be canonized, AND demonized upon my death." Here upon Michael's passing, I fully expect the same for him. But I choose to remember first his awkward--but kindly--attempts to show love and care to those who needed it most.

Todd, the Basement Plague Demon

"Play da movie!" "Ya, play!" Anyone who's got "Shrek" on dvd is peeing their pants right now...

So, The Todd is sick today, crouching miserably in our basement bedroom. He came down with what we thought was a cold yesterday until the whole nausea, high temperature, body aches, "I feel like someone's beaten my entire body with a crowbar" feeling. Two of our co-workers are out of the station with Swine Flu...so this changed things. I would like to tell you that I sent the twins away for their safety, put on my Florence Nightingale dress and selflessly cared for my One True Love all night while mopping his fevered brow.
Okay. Well.
First, that Florence Nightingale dress is REALLY hot and our air conditioning isn't that great and my back starts to break out when I sweat, and...y'know.
Secondly, The Todd sick is one thing. He is quiet. He is noble. (Editor's note: we're now on Day Three of the Basement Plague Demon and both the quietness and nobility is gone. I took down a pitcher of ice water last night with sliced limes and a nice little note. He ripped off his sleeping mask and howled "WHY ARE YOU BOTHERING ME?") The twins sick is much closer to the image of the Black Plague during the Middle Ages when the guys would come around with the cart yelling "bring out yer dead!"
Thirdly, we've been mocking the whole Swine Flu scare big time on the show. This knocks out the whole family, and I've got some serious backpedaling to do. So yes, you will see the yellow police tape on the front door today, and if that doesn't keep everyone away I'll paint it with lamb's blood or something.

Deep Thoughts on Jon and Kate Splitting Up

A girlfriend called me about Jon and Kate (parents of two sets of multiples) getting divorced. Mind you, the divorce rate for parents of multiples DOES statistic-wise jump up to around 75% because of all the additional stress and pressure, etc. However, The Todd and I have vowed to NEVER divorce. It's not even a question. Not because I'm married to the most amazing man in the world, (which I am!) or that I'm so super fabulous (I'm too tired to be super fabulous.) No, the truth is much uglier. We're both terrified some judge might give us sole custody of the twins. Believe me, it's US against THEM. Every day.

This is how much I suck as a mother...

The pretty little dock on the pond was crowded, brides shooting portfolio pictures, families feeding the ducks, and Zachie casually peeing off the side into the cattails. Completely paralyzed, I turned around and stared off into space as if to ask "wow, what sucky mother can't control that little boy? Honestly!"
